" Postmonument is the title of the XIV International Sculpture Biennale of Carrara exhibition, which deals with that radical process of demonumentalization which has freed sculpture from any celebratory, encomiastic functions.(…)
In the exhibition, the theme is introduced by a wide historical section with examples of late 19th and early 20th century monumental production. These stand alongside models of statues from the Fascist period and social realism. But the central part of the exhibition is the groups of works by more than thirty contemporary artists from all over the world, twenty-six of which realized especially for this occasion.
At the same time, the desire for majesty once entrusted to sculpture is today best satisfied by the expressive power of contemporary architects (…) and artists by site-specific projects." Fabio Cavallucci (curator)
Carlos Bunga (Oporto, Portugal, 1976) creates process-oriented works -- installations, performances, video, drawings – that refer to and intervene in their architectural surroundings. While often using ordinary, unassuming materials such as packing cardboard and adhesive tape, the resulting finished works involve an extreme degree of aesthetic care and delicacy, as well as a conceptual complexity derived from the inter-relationship between doing and undoing, between unmaking and remaking. Bunga has had solo shows at the Miami Art Museum and MARCO, and he has participated in Manifesta 5, the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, Sao Paulo Biennial and the Carrara Sculpture Biennial.
