Jane Hammond is an American artist living and working in New York. She uses wit, meticulous craft, and surprising juxtapositions in her paintings, photographs, and mixed-media works, incorporating an extensive vernacular of found images throughout her practice. In her latest body of work titled the “dazzle paintings,” Hammond has produced a stunning combination of painting and photography. Each piece consists of a hand-painted image selected from her extensive photograph collection on top of Plexiglas and mica sheets. These works, such as Carry Me (2011), are both reflective and translucent, presenting an interactive experience for the viewer as the proximity and orientation to the work are changed. The dazzle paintings were recently included in a solo exhibition of Hammond’s work at Galerie Lelong New York. Her renowned sculptural mixed media work, Fallen (2004-ongoing), owned by the Whitney Museum of American Art, is on view at The FLAG Art Foundation in New York through December. Hammond’s work is also on view in a traveling group exhibition at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.
