On view at ABMB 2011: SONG OF SONGS (K) I have compared thee; SONG OF SONGS (N) Who is this that cometh up
Spanish artist Jaume Plensa creates sculptures and installations that generate forms which seek to unify individuals through connections of spirituality, the body, and collective memory. Using a wide range of materials including steel, cast iron, resin, paraffin wax, glass, light, water, and sound, Plensa lends physical weight and volume to the ephemeral aspects of the human condition. At Art Basel Miami Beach, Galerie Lelong presents two examples from Plensa’s Song of Songs series (2005), steel curtains composed of letters that render the sensual words from a biblical poem into almost invisible impressions of language. Also on view is the sculpture Marianna (2011), an alabaster head that explores new perceptions of portraiture and reconceives the photographic image. The artist’s largest exhibition to date is on view at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, Wakefield, in the United Kingdom through January 2012. This past summer, Echo, a 45-foot-tall sculpture of the elongated, contemplative face of a girl made of polyester resin and marble dust, was exhibited in Madison Square Park in New York.
